I am a professional photographer and writer specialising in landscape and outdoor subjects, and based in Lancashire, England. These days my focus has shifted somewhat and I'm spending much of my time writing fiction. My first novel, Three Kinds of North, was published in February 2023, and a sequel, The Sundering Wall, arrives in August 2023. There's plenty more to come: read all about it on my author website.

You can also find me on Facebook and Mastodon, but no longer on the sad remains of Twitter.

I’m passionate about walking, climbing and cycling, but my enthusiasm encompasses almost any activity that doesn’t involve the infernal combustion engine. I’ve experienced ocean sailing, snorkelling, kayaking, canyoning and cross-country skiing as well as trekking, scrambling and climbing.

In the last few years my main focus has been on bikes. I've ridden everywhere from the boards of the Manchester Velodrome to the wilds of New Zealand. There's now an ebook about my experiences mountain biking in NZ.  I've produced a guidebook to the Lancashire Cycleway (2nd edition published 2017) as well as numerous articles, and more recently I've produced a guidebook to Off-Road Rides in the Lake District, suitable for a range of bikes and riders.

I've also written extensively about photography. I produced a string of Nikon camera guides for Ammonite Press and for many years wrote a regular photography section for Outdoor Enthusiast. With Chiz Dakin I wrote Outdoor Photography for Cicerone Press.

I have travelled and photographed in Pakistan, New Zealand, Canada, Morocco, and Australia, as well as most countries in Europe. I supply images to the global library Alamy as well as meeting clients' needs directly from my own library. Images on this site are available for licensing, but there are many more where they came from: please contact me if there's something you don't see.
